National Library modernisation agreed

A shake-up of the way the National Library of Scotland is run has been agreed despite concerns about government centralisation.

Legislation was passed at Holyrood to modernise the establishment, which holds more than 14 million items, including the last letter written by Mary Queen of Scots. It will update the way the library is run and aims to make the collections more accessible to the public.

Opposition MSPs backed the National Library of Scotland Bill but complained that government ministers were taking too much power for themselves.
