Many groups keen to celebrate death of Thatcher

OPPONENTS of Baroness Thatcher have organised parties to celebrate her death this weekend and on the day of her funeral next Wednesday.

In Glasgow, organisers on social networking sites claim to be hosting a party, with nearly 100 users signalling they will attend the event. The Maggie Thatcher Death Street Party will be held on Saturday from 5pm, according to a Facebook group, although no location was listed.

It followed an impromptu demonstration in the city’s George Square on Monday, at which 300 people danced and drank champagne. The incident, which was broadcast on the American television network NBC News yesterday, was branded “embarrassing for Glasgow” by Conservative city councillor David Meikle and “tasteless bile” by deputy Scottish Tory leader Jackson Carlaw MSP.

In Belfast, an event titled Street Party for the Death of Maggie Thatcher has been listed as taking place on Friday from 8pm at the city’s Corn Market.

“Just get to Corn Market and throw confetti in the air – why not!” wrote the organiser on Facebook, a female trade union employee, according to her profile.

Hundreds of ex-miners will also have a “hell of a time” at a party with bands and comedians as Baroness Thatcher’s funeral takes place, an official said last night.

Durham Miners’ Association general secretary David Hopper said that at a meeting in the last days of the north east coal industry, a unanimous agreement was made to hold a celebration when she died.

It will take place on Wednesday at the Easington Colliery Club in County Durham, subject to the approval of its committee.

“It’s the end of an era for the person who destroyed our coal mines,” said Mr Hopper.

“We are recognising that the perpetrator of all this evil has gone and thankfully she will not be coming back.

“We will have a hell of a time, we will have comedians on and bands and we are going to enjoy ourselves.

“There will be a lot of men wanting to have a drink and celebrate.

“The proof will be in the pudding, but the club is big and there will be 500-600 miners in there with room for more in an overflow.”
