Lord Lucan ‘fled to Eigg’, police report claims

LORD Lucanfled to a tiny Scottish island after the murder of the family nanny in his home, a police report has alleged.

A 34-year-old internal report reveals that police believed the peer had sought refuge in monastic ruins on the west coast island of Eigg.

Sandra Rivett, 29, was found bludgeoned to death in the Lucan household in 1974, shortly after which time Lucan had disappeared.

The internal police document, published in 1979, also unveils a plot by Scotland Yard to send a detective to live undercover in Eigg.

The document was revealed after being handed to Neil Berriman, Ms Rivett’s son.

Mr Berriman, 46, said that police suspected Lucan had made several visits to the small island, which has a population of less than 100 people.

They also thought that Lucan travelled to and from Eigg via a large vessel.

“The document I have seen was an internal reviuew of the investigation,” Berriman told the Daily Record, “a summary of the information gathered and what needed to be followed up.

“It said they believed Lord Lucan had used a property on Eigg as a possible bolthole and had visited it more than once.

“It mentioned a commercial, or some kind of powered vessel, which detectives believed he used to get to the island from the Scottish mainland.

“Scotland Yard was sufficiently convinced by this intelligence that they considered sending an inspector called Tony Rusell to the island to pose as a writer, to essentially spy on the building.”

A BBC documentary shown two months ago also claimed that Lucan had fled to Scotland.

Mr Berriman only discovered that Ms Rivett was his birth mother in 2004 after her adopted mother died nine years ago.

“It doesn’t matter how many years have passed since my mother’s death. I am determined to seek justice for her.”

Ms Rivett was found in a mailsack in the Lucan home in November 7, 1974. Lady Lucan, the peer’s wife, was also attacked but managed to escape the house after stumbling onto the scene.

The case remains open at Scotland Yard.
