London 2012 Olympics memorabilia to be auctioned

AN AUCTION of London 2012 Olympics memorabilia will be “a last chance” to own a part of the Games, according to organisers.

Among the 100 lots is a jersey signed by Olympic champion cyclist Bradley Wiggins, another signed by several of Team GB’s gold medal-winning velodrome squad and a Mary Poppins costume worn during the opening ceremony.

Also going under the gavel will be the scarecrow outfit worn by a performer during the Olympic Games opening ceremony and a copy of Shakespeare’s The Tempest read by Sir Ian McKellen during the Paralympic Games opening ceremony.

Chris Holmes, former Great Britain Paralympian gold medal winner, said it would be the final sale of memorabilia and a chance to revisit the glory of last year’s events.

“We wanted to get as much of the memorabilia and the items used in the Games into the hands of the public, and to give them a last chance to remember the great sporting and cultural occasion that was London 2012,” he said.

Items including tennis balls, javelins and running track blocks will also be on sale.

The main auction is taking place at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on Friday.
