THE mayor of Rio de Janeiro has congratulated Boris Johnson and London for putting on “the greatest Games ever”.

Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio – which will host the next Olympics in 2016 – said it would be hard to follow on from such a great Games but they are working closely with London to learn as much as possible. He was speaking at a joint press conference with Mr Johnson.

Coe praises women for great moments

LONDON 2012 supremo Lord Coe has hailed female Olympians for providing some of the most memorable moments of the Games.

It is the first Olympics where every nation has male and female athletes, and the only one in which women compete in every sport. Britain’s men have won 14 golds, compared with ten by the women.

More tickets for closing ceremony

EXTRA Olympic closing ceremony tickets could be made available to the public, but not until the day of the event.

Organisers have held back some tickets because they were unable to predict exactly how many seats would not provide a satisfactory view of the show until the Olympic Stadium is set up for Sunday night.

Locog said it would know about ticket allocation tonight.

Athlete forced to use medal for ID

A BRONZE medal-winner had to use his medal to get into an Olympic arena after security did not recognise his identification photograph.

Australia’s Chris Morgan was stopped by security staff at the ExCeL arena but was let through after he pulled the medal out of his pocket and said: “How’s that for ID?”
