In her closing speech, she also mocked David Cameron who was recorded at the UN meeting in New York saying the Queen “purred” down the phone to him when he called her with the result of the Scottish referendum.

Ms Harman told delegates: “Sometimes it’s like we have got David Brent as our prime minister.”

And she later poked fun of him for the photo of him and his wife Samantha looking at fish taken this summer.

She joked: “Cold and slippery - and the fish didn’t look any good either.”

The Camberwell and Peckham MP then went on to blast the picture of him in his “Baywatch-style” wetsuit, saying there was no chance of any confusion between him and The Hoff (David Hasselhoff).

She also quipped that the party had its own Angelina Jolie in Angela Eagle and that she (Harman) owned tights older than the man who introduced her at a Young Labour event.

Bringing her remarks to a close, she warned the fight leading up to the general election would be “really dirty”.

She went on: “We have got to face up to how bad it is going to be.

“It is going to be even worse than when they took that Baked Alaska out of the freezer in The Great British Bake Off.

“The Tories are going to throw a lot of mud at Ed (Miliband) and at our party ...but we are up for that fight.

“We have got the policies, the people and the principles, but above all we have the duty to save this country from another term of Tory rule and give people the hope of a better Britain.”

The conference ended with a rendition of The Red Flag, followed by the hymn Jerusalem.
