Fish suppers lose out to a Chinese for top takeaway

CHINESE food has knocked fish and chips off the top spot as the favourite fast food bought by Britons, a new study has found.

The survey also revealed the average person now spends £550 a year on takeaways.

After Chinese came Indian – knocking chips into third place, reports the VoucherCodes.co.uk poll.

It also found people were now spending an average of £110 a month on eating out – with £45.98 of that on takeaways, at seven a month.

Young adults aged between 25 and 34 were the most likely to tuck into a takeaway.

Just under half of people in this age group who were polled said they regularly ate food from fast-food outlets because they did not have the time or desire to cook at home.

The study found the habit cost them an average £2,626 each year, money spent at both takeaways and restaurants.

This was almost double the amount spent on fast food by people aged 45 and over.

Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk said: “Takeaway meals are now part of everyday life for busy consumers. But we found eating on the fly no longer needs to be an unhealthy or expensive option.”

Fish and chips, often seen as one of the most traditional British dishes, has topped most takeaway polls for decades.

“Britain has always been a nation of food lovers, and with nearly every type of cuisine available on the go throughout Britain’s city centres, it no surprise to see consumers forking out so much on food each year.
