Fathers lose out on bagging the big car

Families are increasingly relying on the “Fiesta father” and the “MPV mum” for their car needs, according to a survey.

Thirty years ago, it was mainly fathers who drove the larger vehicle in a two-car family.

But dads are now going for smaller cars like the Ford Fiesta, while mothers drive MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles) and off-road 4x4s, says the poll by insurers Aviva.

The company said that in the 1980s men were keen on larger cars such as the Ford Cortina and Vauxhall Cavalier with women opting for Fiestas, Minis and other small cars.

Exploring family driving history going back 30 years, the survey of 2,500 UK adults, showed that in the second decade of the 21st century, driveways often feature SUVs (sports utility vehicles) as well as MPVs and 4x4s.
