Evacuation at airport after suspect case sparks alert

MANCHESTER Airport had to be evacuated this morning after a suspect package sparked a terror alert.

The fresh alert came as Hussain Osman, one of the alleged failed July 21 suicide bombers, was remanded in custody after being extradited from Italy.

One man was arrested under the Terrorism Act after the incident at Manchester Airport.

It is understood the arrested man is of Asian appearance and the suspect package involved was a black briefcase or suitcase.

The airport said there would be disruption to flights but passengers should continue to report to the airport as normal.

Greater Manchester Police said that they were called to the airport at around 8.30am after a man was seen acting suspiciously on the airport apron close to stand 26.

He resisted arrest and officers used a Taser gun to pacify him.

A police spokesman said: "Police attempted to arrest the men who struggled with officers. A Taser was then used to detain the man.

"The Army bomb disposal unit were called to examine the package which was found on the apron. A cordon was set up and parts of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have been closed."

A spokeswoman for Manchester Airport said: "Greater Manchester Police is currently investigating a suspicious package on the apron between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

"As a precautionary measure a police cordon is in operation and part of Terminal 2 and C Pier have been evacuated.

"There will be an impact on some flights due to leave Terminal 2 this morning, although every effort will be made to minimise disruption, and passengers should continue to report to the airport as normal."

Terminal 2 was finally re-opened at 11.40am.

Osman appeared before Bow Street Magistrates Court, sitting at Belmarsh Prison and court complex, charged in connection with the failed bomb attacks on London on July 21. He will appear again at the Old Bailey on December 8.
