EU fishing decision making ‘irrational’

The way important EU decisions are made about the future of the fishing industry is not rational, the environment secretary has said.

Richard Lochhead was among European fisheries ministers who thrashed out a deal to reform industry rules in Luxembourg on Tuesday, with talks ending at 4:20am on Wednesday.

“I was there to the bitter end along with other bleary-eyed ministers and officials,” he told MSPs at Holyrood.

“It is certainly not a rational way of reaching decisions which will affect the sustainability of our fisheries and the very future of our industry and coastal communities over the next decade or so.”

He was updating the Scottish Parliament on the reform the Common Fisheries Policy.
