The 47-year-old former Manchester United star was held at lunchtime on Tuesday in London’s Primrose Hill, after he had been seen drinking in the Queens pub in Regent’s Park Road.

Scotland Yard did not name him but said: “Officers from Camden borough attended and a man in his mid-40s was arrested on suspicion of common assault. He was taken into custody and subsequently cautioned for common assault.

“The victim, a man, did not require medical assistance at the scene.”

Cantona’s agent in Paris refused to comment.

The former French international displayed his fiery temper when he infamously launched a kung-fu style kick at a Crystal Palace fan after being sent off for Manchester United in a Premiership match at Selhurst Park in January 1995.

He was initially given a two-week jail term but took his case to the Court of Appeal, where judges reduced his sentence to 120 hours community work.

He was also banned from football for nine months.

Cantona retired from the game in 1997.
