Newsnight presenter Evan Davis was named worst-dressed man in the countdown for GQ magazine, for resembling “a supply geography teacher” on screen.

England footballer Rooney makes his debut in this year’s best-dressed list, in 26th place, for swapping shell suits for a “sharp” wardrobe.

David and Victoria Beckham’s 12-year-old son Romeo, who recently modelled for fashion house Burberry, outshines his father in 25th place compared to 46th spot for the ex-football star.

The Imitation Game and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch follows model and The Theory Of Everything actor Redmayne in second place in the GQ Best-Dressed Men List, compiled by staff at the magazine and a panel of industry experts.

While the Prince of Wales is in seventh place, his one-year-old grandson Prince George makes his debut in 49th position.

The magazine said: “Already following in the footsteps of his great-great-great-uncle, Edward VIII, and his grandfather, the Prince of Wales, Prince George looks set to become the UK’s best-dressed man.”

Edward VIII was known in the US as the “arbiter of men’s fashions”.

Davis, who recently took over from Jeremy Paxman as host of the BBC’s flagship show Newsnight, has been named worst-dressed man for his look on-screen.

The magazine says that while off-duty his unconventional “taste in clothing is more in the direction of leather and chains (he was once photographed in black leather boots and a thick chain around his neck)… on-screen he looks more like a supply geography teacher”.

Meanwhile, his BBC colleague, world affairs editor John Simpson, is named one of the best-dressed, in 32nd place, for being “the only reporter who consistently sports a well-pressed shirt under his flak jacket”.

The worst-dressed top ten includes football commentator Clive Tyldesley, former cabinet minister Michael Portillo, The Only Way Is Essex star Bobby Norris, and TV doctor Christian Jessen.

The best-dressed top ten includes Fifty Shades Of Grey star Jamie Dornan, Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner, Radio 1 Breakfast DJ Nick Grimshaw, actors Idris Elba and Douglas Booth, model David Gandy and film producer David Furnish. Others in the best-dressed top 50 include X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary (13), singers David Bowie (15) and Tinie Tempah (20), ex-Doctor Who star Matt Smith (23) and Jude Law’s son Rafferty (42).

The Duke of Edinburgh was the surprise entry to last year’s best dressed list, and Radio 1 DJ Grimshaw took the top spot, followed by The Avengers star Tom Hiddleston.

In the worst-dressed category, fashion designer Ozwald Boateng topped last year’s list, followed by George Galloway MP, TV scientist Brian Cox and former Co-op Bank boss Paul Flowers.
