Easter-egg wrapping weighs 250 tonnes

Waste from Easter eggs this year could weigh up to 250 tonnes, an environmental organisation has said.

Zero Waste Scotland, which encourages people to reduce the amount of rubbish they produce and to recycle more, estimates that seven million chocolate eggs and other similar treats will be bought this Easter, creating tonnes of extra waste.

It is urging people in Scotland to consider the environment when choosing their Easter treats.

Environment secretary Richard Lochhead joined that call, and said: “Chocolate treats and family get-togethers can be a great way to enjoy holidays like Easter. And it’s so easy to take simple steps to help the environment and Scotland’s economy at this time too. Choosing Easter eggs with less packaging sends a clear message to retailers about consumer preferences.”
