Kate, 32, came top in a vote by 2,000 Britons, beating fashion designer Victoria Beckham, 40, into second spot.

Singer and X Factor judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, 31 – who was dubbed “Kermit the frog” by Simon Cowell after she wore a bright green dress on a recent edition of the talent show – took third spot.

Harry Potter actress Emma Watson, 24, who recently won the British Style Award at the British Fashion Awards, was voted the fourth most stylish woman of the year.

A spokeswoman for beauty website feelunique.com, which commissioned the poll, said: “The nation fell in love with Kate Middleton as soon as her engagement to Prince William was announced.

“And she never fails to impress at any of her public appearances so it’s not at all surprising that she has been voted the most stylish woman of 2014.

“Similarly, Victoria Beckham, who is never out of the limelight, is rarely spotted looking anything less than immaculate. Over the years her style has changed considerably, which is a sign of her commitment to fashion.”

Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, 34, who is known for her elegant dress sense on stage, came fifth in the poll, while actress Angelina Jolie, 39, came sixth.

American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, 25, came seventh, just ahead of English actress Keira Knightley, 29, who is the current face of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle perfume. The top ten is completed by X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger, 36, who has recently started her own online clothing range, and Friends star Jennifer Aniston, 45.

Presenter Myleene Klass, 36, appeared in the list in 11th place.

Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence, 24 – better known for her award ceremony blunders, including tripping on the steps on the way to collect her Best Actress Oscar and a wardrobe malfunction at the Screen Actors Guild, than her fashion nouse, despite being the current face of Dior – also appeared in the poll.

Australian pop star Kylie Minogue, 46; supermodel Kate Moss, 40 and Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden, 43, all made the top 20, with the spokeswoman adding: “It’s encouraging to see women of all ages, shapes and sizes dominating the poll.

“The key to their style is the fact they have all found an image that suits them and they dress accordingly.”

At the other end of the spectrum, 2014’s least stylish woman was voted to be former glamour model Katie Price, 36 – previously known as Jordan.

The outspoken business-woman is renowned for her garish dress sense.

Kim Kardashian’s recent controversial appearance on the cover of Paper magazine – in which legendary photographer Jean-Paul Goude had her balance a Champagne saucer on her bare buttocks – appears not to have done her any favours, as the 34-year-old reality TV star was placed second least stylish.

Lady Gaga, 28, whose outlandish fashion taste helped make her a household name, came third, ahead of TOWIE star Gemma Collins.
