Drivers hit as snow returns

HEAVY snow returned to parts of Britain yesterday, causing chaos for motorists and forcing the cancellation of sports fixtures.

Drivers had to battle icy conditions and road closures as snow hit parts of northern Scotland and northern England. Aisling Creevey, of MeteoGroup, said:

"The snow fell most frequently in northern Scotland, where there was two to five centimetres in some parts. The lowest temperature recorded was just below minus six degrees in Loch Glascarnoch."

There were weather- related crashes across the Northumbria Police area, with some roads closed.

A spokesman said: "Police are reminding motorists to be extra vigilant when driving due to heavy snowfall overnight."

Snow is expected to fall again in northern Scotland over the next few days, but is less likely in other parts of the UK.
