Do anything that you want to do but uh-uh, don’t step on my blue suede shoes …

Prince Harry seemed to have taken fashion tips from Elvis when he stepped on to a Jamaican dancefloor sporting a pair of bright blue suede shoes.

The prince had been visiting the Rise Life project in central Kingston, when he was pulled to his feet by Chantol Dormer for an impromptu dance to a rendition of reggae star Bob Marley’s song One Love.

The Rise Life project is an inspirational scheme for young people in one of the more deprived districts of the Jamaican capital. It provides learning facilities and a safe haven for young people aged ten and upwards.

During his visit, Harry met children and staff participating in a counselling session and viewed some of the centre’s facilities including an IT workshop, before attending the Rise Life party.

His visit to the island is part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations taking place this year.

Later on, he changed his plans for a visit to a Jamaican army base in light of the news that six British soldiers had been killed in Afghanistan.

Harry – a captain in the Army Air Corps – was due to abseil down a tower at the Jamaican Defence Force HQ in Kingston, but instead just watched other troops perform the display.

St James’s Palace said the prince took the decision himself as he did not think it was now appropriate. A spokesman said: “Prince Harry does not wish to take part in a military activity which would be deemed peripheral to an Apache pilot, on this day, when the focus for the British Army should be on its core professional roles.”
