Digital album sales surpass 100 million mark

Sales of digital albums have passed the 100 million mark powered in part by the success of singers including Adele and Ed Sheeran.

Sales of digital albums have passed the 100 million mark powered in part by the success of singers including Adele and Ed Sheeran.

Both Adele’s hit album 21 and Sheeran’s + have sold more than 250,000 copies online and are the top two in a UK chart of the best-selling digital albums.

Official Charts Company figures show digital releases now account for more than a third of the albums market. The surge in popularity of digital music has seen more than 50 million albums bought online in the past two years.

Geoff Taylor, chief executive of industry body the BPI, said: “Sales are surging ahead as consumers embrace the convenience, value and choice offered by online services.

“And now British artists have taken the gold and silver positions in the best-selling digital artist albums of all time.”
