•Responding to parents’ fears that children would be able to access explicit content on laptops or mobile phones in cafes, libraries and other public places, the Prime Minister will unveil measures to instill “confidence” in WiFi systems.

Mr Cameron said: The Prime Minister said: “We are promoting good, clean, WiFi in local cafes and elsewhere to make sure that people have confidence in public WiFi systems so that they are not going to see things they shouldn’t.”

The Children’s Charity Coalition on Internet Safety had already written to BT demanding action over surfing on the web.

The coalition, which includes the NSPCC and The Children’s Society, welcomed the deal.

John Carr, the organisation’s secretary, said: “We welcome any deal which is long overdue. Public access to the internet is a modern reality and we have to fund a way of dealing with this growing problem.”
