Crimestoppers' milestone as 100,000th suspect held

CRIMESTOPPERS has passed a milestone after the 100,000th suspect was arrested following information passed to the helpline.

The anonymous telephone service has provided information to thousands of police officers across Britain since it was formed in 1988.

Lord Ashcroft, who founded Crimestoppers, said the milestone had been reached with the arrest of a Durham man on suspicion of burglary earlier this week. He said: "These landmark figures are testimony to the way that the public has embraced Crimestoppers, and they are the result of an amazing amount of hard work from everyone associated with the charity."

Since it was founded, a total of 887 people have been charged with murder or attempted murder, and drugs worth 189 million have been seized as a result of Crimestoppers' work.
