Chris Huhne: Prison is ‘fascinating’

FORMER cabinet minister Chris Huhne has described prison as fascinating, according to former Tory MP Jonathan Aitken.

Huhne was jailed for 8 months for perverting the course of justice after being found guilty of forcing his wife to take speeding points on his behalf.

Aitken, who spent seven months in prison in 1999 for perjury revealed he had exchanged letters with the former Energy and Climate Change Secretary, noting that he seemed “cheerful” and in “good shape.”

“I’ve talked to him over the years a few times.

“I don’t know him very well but when he was obviously on his way into prison I wrote him a letter of cheer and got a very nice letter back,” Aitken said.

“I think he found some of the sensible tips for a high-profile prisoner useful.

He added: “He (Huhne) said, ‘I’ve now gone through Wandsworth and Leyhill and I’ve found them fascinating’, which is a surprisingly positive adjective to use about prison.

“And I got the general impression from his letters that he was in good shape.”

Huhne, whose wife Vicky Pryce was also jailed for eight months for perverting the course of justice, showed no sign of repentance, according to Aitken.

“This was not a confessional correspondence, this was a sort of cheerful correspondence.

“So there was no clue as to repentance.”
