British movie industry stalls

The Harry Potter magic was not enough to halt a decline in the British film industry.

The final instalment of the Potter series of movies made £73.1 million at the UK box office — bringing the total takings for the complete saga to over £1 billion.

The Potter films also sold £30 million in video formats and were watched 212 million times on UK TV.

The British Film industry said fewer films were made last year than in 2010 but said the Potter effect would leave a lasting legacy in the UK, far beyond the box office .

UK box office receipts for last year passed the £1 billion mark, boosted not only by the Potter film but offerings such as The Kings Speech and The 
Inbetweeners.

A total of 558 films were released in the UK during 2011.
