British man on terror charges in Kenya

THE trial of a British man facing terrorism charges in Kenya has begun in the coastal town of Mombasa.

The suspect, who has been identified as Jermain Jhon Grant in court documents, sat silent on Thursday as the prosecution’s first witness told a magistrate’s court of his initial meeting with the suspect.

Grant faces charges stemming from what Kenyan police say was his role in a failed terrorist plot in Kenya late last year.

The witness, Hassan Mohammed, said he helped Grant find a Kenyan wife. He said Grant lied to him about his identity and nationality.

Grant is already serving a jail term for being in Kenya illegally.

Kenya has been on high alert for possible terrorist strikes after sending its troops into Somalia last October.
