Bowel cancer screening rises

Uptake rates for bowel cancer screening have increased, with official figures showing a rate of 54.5 per cent for the 50-74 age group from November 2009 to October 2011 – a rise of 0.8 per cent compared with November 2008 to October 2010.

The overall increase was welcomed by Conservative health spokesman Jackson Carlaw. But there was concern that uptake was less successful in deprived areas.

“I’m glad we are now approaching the 60 per cent target, as it is a system proven to save lives,” Mr Carlaw said.

Public health minister Michael Matheson said: “It is important that men and women throughout Scotland have the information to make an informed choice.”
