Boat Race swimmer ordered to stay away from Olympic torch route

The swimmer who brought the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race to a dramatic halt has been banned from the Olympic torch route and from visits to Windsor before the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Trenton Oldfield, 35, caused the annual contest on the River Thames earlier this month to be stopped for around half an hour after he swam into the vessels’ path.

The self-proclaimed anti-elitist yesterday appeared before magistrates in Feltham, Middlesex, who imposed a series of strict bail conditions.

Oldfield did not enter a plea to the charge of causing a public nuisance, and was granted bail.
