The injured baby had been brought to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital from a house in the west of the city on Wednesday night. She was in critical condition. Last night police announced the child had died.

Her 23-year-old father appeared before a judge in Craigavon Magistrates’ Court in Co Armagh yesterday morning.

The accused, who was not named for legal reasons, was bailed to appear in court again later this month.

A spokesman from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said last night: “Following the court appearance of a 23-year-old man in Craigavon this morning detectives from Serious Crime Branch will be consulting with the Public Prosecution Service in relation to this case.”

A post-mortem examination will take place in the coming days.
