BBC News tops TV ratings for Boxing Day

Devastating scenes of flooding in the north of England and shoppers scrambling for post-Christmas bargains were the most-watched television of Boxing Day – as BBC News topped the TV ratings.

BBC News attracted 6.2 million viewers at 10pm, 5.6 million for regional news and weather at 6:50pm and 5.3 million at 6:40pm – as BBC One swept the board for the top ten most watched shows.

A new show set in war time And Then There Were None was the most-watched drama with six million reaching for the remote at 9pm, followed closely by the revelation that Arthur “Fatboy” Chubb had been murdered in a case of mistaken identity – with 5.7 million watching EastEnders at 7:30pm.

The Christmas Day episode of EastEnders , which went head-to-head with Downton Abbey, was also seen by 5.7 million.

Other new series also proved popular as Still Open All Hours attracted 5.1 million viewers and Dickensian did well during its first and second episodes – with five million tuning in at 7pm and 4.3 million at 8:30pm.

A family-friendly line-up also saw BBC One proving popular during the day – with 4.8 million households watching Shaun The Sheep: The Farmer’s Llamas at 6:10pm.
