The artwork made of sand by sculptor Mark Anderson was built to commemorate Andy Murray’s Wimbledon victory earlier this year.

Sculptures of Iron Man and characters from the film Monsters Inc were also damaged, with the repair bill estimated to be in the region of £10,000.

Anderson who spent around 300 hours working on the sculptures said: “It is just a brainless act that has caused so many people, so much heartache.”

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “Sand sculptures have been vandalised and there is damage to a door and a lock, though nothing has been taken.

“We have officers attending today to liaise with the owner.”
