100 Tories call for law on EU poll

More than 100 Tory MPs have signed a “strongly worded” letter calling on the Prime Minister to pass a law before 2015 paving the way for a European Union referendum.

David Cameron pledged a poll would take place during the next parliament after a renegotiation of Britain’s relationship with the EU
during a major speech earlier this year.

But Tory MP John Baron yesterday delivered a letter urging the Prime Minister to go further and write the referendum into law before the next general election, scheduled for May 2015.

Mr Baron made the move in the latest step of a back-bench campaign to secure government backing for such legislation.

He previously moved a bill in the Commons to bring about such a law, but it will not proceed in its current form.
