UK news: Miliband tells Labour to look outwards

Labour leader Ed Miliband will today urge his party to be less "inward-looking" as he defends controversial plans to scrap elections to the Shadow Cabinet. He will tell activists Labour must reform so it is more responsive to the public as it tries to present itself as the next party of government.

Inquiry after Milly trial

Director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer QC will examine how victims are treated after admitting the Milly Dowler trial raised "fundamental questions". Levi Bellfield received a life term yesterday for murdering the 13-year-old after the Dowler family were upset by the way they were treated in court.

Union leader warns of attack on civil liberties

A UNION leader warned millions of workers today that they face the greatest attack on civil liberties since the miners' strike 25 years ago as plans continue for a wave of walkouts over pensions, jobs and pay. Bob Crow, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, said the Government was putting in place contingency plans to counter strikes by up to 750,000 teachers, lecturers, civil servants and other public sector workers which are due to start next Thursday.

China's premier arrives

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao arrives in Britain today for a three-day visit intended to boost commercial, economic and political links between the countries. He flies into Birmingham Airport, before visiting Stratford-upon-Avon and the MG car plant in Longbridge tomorrow. He will then travel to London for talks on Monday with Prime Minister David Cameron and a UK-China summit.

TV's Walsh talks to police

TV star Louis Walsh has met police over claims he indecently assaulted a 24-year-old man, his spokeswoman said. The X Factor judge, 58, was voluntarily questioned by officers yesterday. The spokeswoman added: "He didn't go to the police station, but he met with police."

Glastonbury: A drug-testing lab has been set up at the event to help the Government "build a fast and accurate picture" of substance use on the festival circuit. Drugs will be analysed, identified and catalogued within hours of being confiscated by police.

Salford: Householder Peter Flanagan, arrested on suspicion of murdering a burglar, has been bailed to July 25. John Bennell, 27, from Hyde, Greater Manchester, died from a stab wound to the chest after four masked men tried to break in the back door of a terraced house in Salford at midnight on Wednesday.
