UK News in brief: Police search stately home after killing

Police have searched the grounds of the stately home Hatfield House for a man suspected of murdering his ex-girlfriend. The body of Red Cross worker Angela Hoyt, 34, was found at her home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, on Tuesday. Yesterday, around 30 officers scoured the grounds following a tip-off.

Protester hit 'justified'

A wheelchair user "inadvertently" hit with a baton at the student fees protests will fight on after a ruling police were justified in their treatment of him. The actions against Jody McIntyre were "justifiable given the volatile and dangerous situation" on December 9, said a Scotland Yard inquiry.

Sacked Baby P chief 'not motivated by money'

Sharon Shoesmith has insisted she was never motivated by money in her two-year legal challenge over her sacking after the Baby P tragedy. The former director of children's services at Haringey Council has also hit out at the "irresponsible" actions of former education secretary Ed Balls, saying he led his department into "complete disarray". The Court of Appeal yesterday ruled that she was unfairly sacked. She could receive up to 1 million if the decision is not overturned.

Arrests after gun deaths

Three people were arrested on suspicion of murder last night after two teenagers were shot dead as they were chased down an alley. Mohammed Farah, 19, died at the scene, and Amin Ismail, 18, died in Milton Keynes Hospital in Buckinghamshire with a gunshot wound to the head. The suspects, all from Bletchley, remain in custody, Thames Valley Police said.

Take That relight their fire

Take That set the seal on their reunion last night as they kicked off their sell-out tour - one of the biggest ever staged. The show, at Sunderland's Stadium Of Light football ground, was the first major public gig by the group with Robbie Williams, left, restored to the line-up.

Essex: Detectives have appealed for help tracing a burglar dubbed "Goldilocks" because he sleeps in victims' beds. The suspect is wanted in connection with two burglaries at an address in Sevenacres, Wickford. Police came up with the nickname because on both occasions the beds were slept in and food was eaten.

Manchester: The first major UK exhibition about one of the world's most dangerous jobs - war correspondent - opens today. Martin Bell, Michael Nicholson and Kate Adie are among the contributors to the event at the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester.
