Tycoon Gorman’s lawyer meets judge

The lawyer representing tycoon Mary Gorman has met prosecutors in front of a judge in Florida to discuss the criminal case against her for drugs possession and assaulting a police officer.

Gorman, 44, was arrested at an Orlando nightclub last August, after staff alerted police to an incident in a toilet cubicle.

She was charged with the possession of cocaine and striking an officer after police allegedly discovered her performing a sex act on a stranger in front of her husband Chris, founder of The Gadget Shop chain.

Last week, a judge rejected a plea deal that would have spared Gorman, from Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, jail time and a criminal record in exchange for community service.

Yesterday’s hearing at the Orange County courthouse, in Orlando, before Judge Mike Murphy was to hear how prosecutors wanted to proceed and possibly set a trial date for the spring if no agreement could be reached.

Defence attorney Mark Horwitz is trying to secure a new deal to try to keep his client out of jail.

Gorman faces felony charges of assaulting a police officer and possession of a controlled drug, each carrying a maximum sentence of five years in jail and a £3,200 fine, and a lesser charge of possessing drugs paraphernalia, which could carry an additional year of prison time.
