Sniffer dog teams were seen going over the vehicle and part of the Our Dynamic Earth building.

One bystander said there were still several police officers and dogs on the scene at 3pm, with suggestions one man involved in the car chase may still be at large.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “Police in Edinburgh have detained a man and a woman in the car park of Our Dynamic Earth after they failed to stop following a traffic offence in the Cowgate at around 2pm today.

“The car they were travelling in is believed to have been stolen from Edinburgh and the man and woman are currently assisting police with their enquiries.”
