Two of Capital’s hospitals listed on £1bn repairs bill

TWO hospitals in the Capital have been named on a list of NHS buildings in Scotland facing a £1bn repair bill.

The State of the NHS Scotland Assets and Facilities Report 2012, published yesterday, revealed that £948 million is needed to bring buildings including the Royal Edinburgh and the Sick Kids to standard.

The Evening News revealed in November that more than £104m is needed for maintenance at nine ageing NHS Lothian hospitals – and more than £87m worth of work is needed at other buildings owned by the health board.

Scottish Conservative health spokesman Jackson Carlaw said: “One ageing building is the Sick Kids in Edinburgh, which hasn’t been fit for purpose for some time. Because of the chaos surrounding the new hospital, patients and staff will have to endure it for at least another four or five years.”

Susan Goldsmith, NHS Lothian’s director of finance, said: “Maintenance and capital investment is prioritised to ensure facilities are of a standard allows us to operate effectively, efficiently and safely.”
