Twitter to launch new ‘trending music’ site

SOCIAL media giant Twitter is moving into the world of online music, with a site dedicated to discovering new music set to launch this week.

The site will work in a similar way to rivals such as Last.fm and HypeMachine, and will be devoted to collating users’ listening on other services.

Unlike Spotify or iTunes, the site and its partner app will not sell or directly stream music.

Twitter’s foray into music has been in the offing since the micro-blogging site purchased music discovery app We Are Hunted last year.

Twitter has over 200 million active worldwide users, who send around 400 million messages a day.
