Trust seeking new image of Prince Charlie

A LOTHIAN history trust is searching for a new image of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

This follows a decision last month from chiefs at the National Galleries of Scotland to accept an expert's opinion that its iconic portrait of the prince was not in fact Charles Stuart, but his brother Henry.

The Battle of Prestonpans Heritage Trust has been using the Galleries' image to promote its work, including a visitor centre at the site of the battle where the prince defeated an English force, but is now seeking a new portrait.

Chairman of the trust, Dr Gordon Prestoungrange, said: "Although we accept the National Galleries' own view of their painting, we are not 100 per cent convinced.

"Nonetheless, Bonnie Prince Charlie is known the world over and it's important that his image should be instantly recognised.

"We are therefore keen to identify another portrait."

Supporters of the trust are being asked to give their opinion at www.battleofprestonpans1745.org
