Tributes for tragic mother and son

A YOUNG boy found dead alongside his mother at their home in Edinburgh was “kind and caring”, his school said yesterday.

More tributes have been paid to Michelle Stephen, 31, and Leon Weston, five, who were discovered in Sighthill, Edinburgh, on Tuesday. Police have confirmed the identities of the pair, but still refuse to be drawn on how they died.

Ms Stephen, who is understood to have been struggling to come to terms with the death of her father, Jimmy Weir, in January, reportedly took her son’s life and then her own.

Leon’s fellow pupils at Murrayburn Primary School have been offered counselling following his death.

Michael Urquhart, the head-teacher, said: “Leon was a kind and caring little boy who enjoyed school and always wanted to do well.

“He loved football and cars, always showed concern for others and was a popular member of the class.

“The school is supporting pupils and staff at this difficult time and we are grateful for the support of parents and the wider school community.”

Mrs Stephen, who had recently remarried, worked as a secretary at St Augustine’s RC High School.

Terry McNamee, its headteacher, said: “We were incredibly shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Michelle Stephen.

“Michelle was a valued member of our school office staff who had built up positive relationships with staff and pupils alike.

“She will be missed by all and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.”
