Tributes paid to Scot killed in Kabul blast

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Scottish contractor who was killed in a suicide car bomb attack in Afghanistan.

David Quinn was among 17 people who died when the Nato vehicle he was travelling in was targeted by the Taleban.

The electrician from Airdrie was working in Kabul when the attack took place on Saturday afternoon, one of the deadliest insurgent strikes in the history of the decade-long conflict.

It is understood Mr Quinn, who was in his thirties, was father to three children with his wife, Jane. A keen flautist, his friends paid tribute to him on a music website where he had been a regular contributor for several years.

Fourstep, a poster on Chiff & Fipple, an internet forum dedicated to flute and whistle playing, wrote: “David was one of the contractors killed in Afghanistan. A sad, sad loss not only to the flute band scene in the UK, but a true gent who would help anyone out when they came asking.”

Other users told how they contacted their local folk music radio stations to ask for a piece of flute music to be played in Mr Quinn’s honour. “He was such a lovely fellow,” wrote Cathy Wilde. “I’m praying for his family.”

The Foreign Office would only confirm that two British nationals were among those killed in the attack at midday on Saturday, which also claimed the lives of five coalition troops and six other civilian contractors.
