Edan was a pupil at Wellshot Primary School in Glasgow. Jennifer McCluskey, the head teacher, said: "We are all devastated by this tragic news and our thoughts are with the family at this sad time.

"Support is being offered to staff and children at the school."

His primary two classmates were told about their friend's death yesterday.

It is understood other pupils at the school were being told about the tragedy in their class groups.

Pastoral care and psychological services will be available for pupils and staff, said a school spokesman.

In a statement Edan's parents said: "We are deeply shocked with the tragic loss of our little angel Edan.

"He was a darling little boy and he was loved by everyone."

The youngster was taken to hospital after the accident in St Mark Street, Shettleston, Glasgow, but died a short while later in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: "About 9am on Tuesday, 16 November, a six-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle in St Mark Street in the Shettleston area of Glasgow.

"He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary, but died a short time later. Police inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and a report will be submitted to the procurator- fiscal."

The accident happened a few yards from the family's front door. Edan was setting off to class with his twin brother and older siblings.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, but he was declared dead shortly after arrival.

The tragedy has left the community stunned and it is understood the dead boy's mother and her children are being comforted by friends and family.

One woman who lives nearby said: "When I think about it, I'm moved to tears.

"I saw the aftermath, with the police in the street and the road sealed off. When I found out what had happened I was devastated. I still am.

"All of the children are lovely and well looked after. When I think of it I well up again."

Another neighbour said: "They are a very quiet family. For this to happen is absolutely devastating.I'm so sorry for Gail.

"She always says hello in the street, but I must admit I only know her name because she sent me a Christmas card."
