Mr Bertram was taken by ambulance to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but later died.

A family statement released through police said: “William was a hard-working, fun-loving and very well-liked guy who will be sorely missed.

“We appreciate everyone’s condolences at this very sad time.”

Mr Bertram was born and raised at Shiphorns, Eddleston, and attended Eddleston Primary and Peebles High School.

He previously worked for local business Graham J Irvine for six years and had been working for Akela for the last year.

Police officers have appealed for witnesses following the collision.

Police Sergeant Vincent Fisher said: “This was a tragic incident. We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the silver Honda Civic car in the vicinity of the accident or who can otherwise assist us with our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
