Travel disruption on cards as weather set to worsen

COMMUTERS are being warned they face disruption this evening with winds of up to 70mph expected to batter the Lothians during rush hour.

Forecasters advise that strong gusts and snowfall over higher ground could hit travel between 6pm and 9pm today amid warnings that trees weakened from last week’s storm could topple this time round.

The predictions come days after last Thursday’s storm battered the country, leaving thousands of homes without electricity and leading to widespread school closures.

A Met Office spokesman said Lothian would see high winds with heavy sleet and snow showers that could cause problems on higher roads just outside the city.

He said: “In Edinburgh, snow showers will turn to sleet and wet snow with winds of up to 60mph likely and in higher ground 70mph gusts are not impossible. It won’t be as windy but there will be enough to cause some disruption.”
