Woman dies after vehicle leaves road and hits wall

A WOMAN has died after her car crashed into a wall, the fire service said last night.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue were called to an incident in Gilmerton Road, Edinburgh, at around 6pm yesterday.

A brigade spokeswoman said the car left the road and hit a wall. Firefighters freed the woman who was trapped, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman, believed to be in her 50s, was travelling alone in the car.

Part of the road was closed while police officers carried out an investigation of the scene.

Earlier, two people were treated by paramedics following a two-car crash in the capital.

The fire service were alerted to the incident on Restalrig Road around 4:30pm. A spokeswoman said one of the cars was on its roof.

When officers and the ambulance service arrived at the scene all four people who had been in the two cars had freed themselves from their vehicles.

Two people were treated by paramedics at the scene but did not go to hospital.

The road has reopened following an accident investigation.
