Vehicles hit by object thrown from Dundee flyover

TAYSIDE Police have launched a major investigation into a “life threatening” incident in which a lorry and car were struck by a heavy object thrown from a flyover onto a busy dual carriageway.

The unidentified object struck the windscreen of a fully laden HGV lorry before striking the windscreen of a car travelling in the same direction.

A force spokesman said today that the lorry driver and a passenger in the car had been “extremely lucky” not to have been seriously injured or killed in the attack on Wednesday night at the Emmock Road flyover on the outskirts of Dundee.

The Emmock Road flyover crosses Powrie Brae on the outskirts of the city on the Dundee to Forfar stretch of the A90 dual carriageway. Both vehicles were travelling northbound when they were hit.

A force spokesman said: “Sometime between about 10.45pm and 11pm last night, an unknown heavy item was recklessly thrown from the Emmock Road flyover at the top of Powrie Brae, on to the northbound carriageway of the A90, which struck the windscreen of a fully laden HGV, directly in front of the driver.

“The same item then struck the windscreen of a car that was travelling northbound in the offside lane, directly in front of the front seat passenger. Both the driver of the HGV and driver and front seat passenger of the car are extremely lucky that the item thrown from the flyover did not penetrate the cabin of either vehicle, the consequences of which would have undoubtedly been potentially life threatening.”

He added: “The seriousness and recklessness of this matter cannot be underestimated and anyone who may have any information regarding this incident or who saw anyone acting suspiciously nearby, should contact Tayside Police.”
