The young woman was pronounced dead at the scene after the red Vauxhall Corsa she was driving was involved in a collision with a white Ford Transit Van on the South Base Road in Peterhead, between the McDonald’s roundabout on the A90 and the ASCO base.

The three males from the van have been taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with “non life-threatening” injuries. One of the injured men was flown to hospital by air ambulance.

The accident, which happened around 8am, completely blocked the busy route.

Inspector Ewan Innes, from the Aberdeenshire and Moray Road Policing Unit, said: “This was a tragic incident resulting in the death of a young driver and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

“Enquiries into the circumstances of the incident are continuing and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or saw a red Vauxhall Corsa or white Ford Transit van being driven on South Base Road, Peterhead, at around 8am today to contact us.

“I would also ask anyone who has any information which would assist our investigation to get in touch.”

In Perthshire an elderly man died following a single-vehicle crash when his black 4x4 left the unclassified road between Dunning and Auchterarder about 8.20am. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police Scotland was alerted to the incident, near to Broadfold Farm, on the road running between Abbey Road and the B8062. Officers attended along with members of the ambulance service and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. The road is currently closed and crash investigators will be attending the scene to carry out enquiries into the circumstances.”

He added: “Details of the deceased will not be released until he has been formally identified and next of kin informed.”
