Transport chiefs back George Street closure

Transport leaders have insisted that the city’s roads system can cope with the closure of George Street.

The Evening News revealed last week that the closure of the upmarket street to through traffic is being considered for this August as part of plans to create a new on-street venue where the parking bays are currently located.

But the move led to concerns about the possible impact of diverting traffic on to Queen Street and Princes Street.

Howoever, Marshall Poulton, the council’s head of transport, said: “We carried out a lot of modelling around the area to make sure it will work. It is predicated on buses going back on Princes Street.”
