A TAXI lay-by is being built under North Bridge to service passengers using Waverley station.

The drop-off and pick-up area on Market Street is being created as part of efforts to extend taxi ranks in streets around the transport hub.

The move comes with the station’s access ramps due to be shut for three weeks from June 3 to allow electronic barriers to be installed.

The barriers will limit vehicle access to the station under Home Office anti-terror policy. Cabbies without permits will be required to drop off fares at the New Street car park or in Market Street.

The new lay-by will double as a loading area for the Scotsman Hotel. Construction works began last week.

City transport convener Councillor Lesley Hinds said: “This lay-by will be ready in time for the start of the south ramp works in the first week in June. A temporary taxi rank outside the Edinburgh Dungeon will also be in place during these ramp works.”
