SSPCA appeal after cat dumped on main road

SCOTLAND’S leading animal welfare charity today launched an appeal for information after a “terrified” cat was found abandoned in a Perthshire lay-by, close to a busy main road.

Motorists discovered the traumatised feline on Friday afternoon after he had been dumped in a pet carrier at the side of the A84 Stirling to Lochearnhead road, two miles outside Callander.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish SPCA said: “The couple who rescued the long-haired cat drove him back to their Scottish Borders home before calling the Scottish SPCA. The cat is now recovering from his ordeal at the charity’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre, where he has been named Sylvester.”

Jenny Scott, a senior SSPCA Inspector, said: “Sylvester was dumped in a very dangerous spot as it’s a busy road. It’s no wonder he was terrified.

“He was left inside a plastic pet carrier and his bed, litter tray, food bowls and cat treats were beside him in a plastic bag”

She continued: “Sylvester is in very good condition and his long coat has no matts or tangles. It certainly seems that someone has cared for him until recently and it’s really sad that he has been abandoned.

“Thankfully, Sylvester is now safe and we will soon find him a loving new home.”

The SSPCA spokeswoman said: “Abandoning an animal is an offence under the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 and anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.
