Scots cyclist killed in crash with lorry in Spain

A SCOTS tourist has died after a collision with a lorry on the Spanish holiday island of Majorca.

Graeme McGilvray, 49, from Glasgow, died at the scene of the accident on a roundabout between Alcudia and Port Alcudia.

The emergency services rushed to the scene just after 4pm on Tuesday but, despite the efforts of paramedics, he tragically died.

Spanish police are investigating the circumstances.

It is believed the cyclist may have failed to stop on approaching the roundabout, giving the lorry driver little time to stop. It is not known if he was alone or part of a group.

He is understood to have been staying at a hotel in the resort of Puerto Pollensa.

A Civil Guard spokesman confirmed: “A Scottish cyclist has died in an accident involving a lorry that occurred just after 4pm yesterday on the Ma-3460 between Alcudia and Port Alcudia.

“Investigators are drafting a report into the circumstances surrounding the accident.”

The report will be handed to an investigating judge put in charge of a routine judicial probe into the tragedy.

Majorca is popular for cyclists, many being attracted to the Tramuntana mountains on the west side of the island.

The resort of Alcudia in the north of the island is a favourite of Britain’s Team Sky.
