Scotland’s weather: Flood threat in West Highlands

DOWNPOURS of up to 200m (8in) of rain will drench parts of the West Highlands from Friday and could cause flooding and travel disruption, the Met Office warned today.

The agency extended its yellow - “be aware” - severe weather alert from noon on Friday until noon on Sunday.

The warning area has also been enlarged, and now stretches up the west coast from the northern tip of Jura almost as far as Ullapool, and inland to Dalwhinie.

Several islands, including Mull, Skye and the Small Isles, are also included.

The Met Office said: “Rain will be persistent and heavy at times through much of Friday and Saturday and lasting into Sunday morning.

“The public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding and some travel disruption, especially on Saturday and on Sunday morning.

“Two-day rainfall totals of 50-100 mm are expected widely, with perhaps 150-200 mm in the wettest spots in the West Highlands.

“As the very mild air is drawn in on the strong south-westerly airstream, snow melt will add to the flooding risk.”
