Ryanair axes two routes from Edinburgh Airport

RYANAIR is to axe two routes from Scotland’s busiest airport this winter forcing some passengers to cancel trips or re-book with other airlines, The Scotsman has learned.

The no-frills carrier will not fly from Edinburgh to Barcelona or Stockholm from next month - routes which it operated last winter

It declined to say how many people had booked flights, but one passenger said the move was likely to “ruin many passengers’ holidays” because they would have to re-arrange their travel plans.

Ryanair said it would refund all costs or help passengers book a flight from another airport.

The move will leave the capital without a link to the popular Spanish city break destination because Veuling, the only other airline on the route, just operates flights during the summer.

It it thought the decision was taken because of rising fuel costs and a dip in bookings.

A Ryanair spokeswoman said: “We are continually reviewing our winter schedule as we ground up to 80 aircraft and selectively reduce our winter season capacity, given there is less demand in winter.”

Edinburgh airport said it regretted the decision, but was in talks with other airlines about picking up the route.

A spokesman said: “We’re sorry passengers have been inconvenienced with the changes in this case.

“For this destination, we have live discussions with a number of airlines to try and cover this service.”
