The Islay lifeboat and a search and rescue helicopter were scrambled just after midnight when the skipper of the boat made a distress call.

He reported that his 40ft yacht hit rocks near the Skerryvore lighthouse, to the south west of Tiree.

The lifeboat crew have been unable to attach a tow rope because of the high winds, hitting almost 60mph.

The rescue effort was carried out in very rough seas and severe gale force winds, according to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

They said the man was not injured and required no hospital treatment.

The Coastguard helicopter finally airlifted the man, the sole occupant on the boat, to safety.
